As the 15th of August deadline is fast approaching, the founder of an initiative to celebrate Yorkshire is urging residents to vote online for York to become the home of the new Great British Railways' national headquarters.

George Jabbour, who set up We are Yorkshire to attract more visitors to the region, organised a cross-party collective show of support outside North Yorkshire County Hall, with councillors from the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrat and Liberal group, Independents, Labour and Greens all gathering to back York’s bid.

Following strong applications from 42 towns and cities across Britain, only York and five other local authorities reached the final stage of the competition to find a location for the headquarters of Great British Railways. The winner will benefit from tremendous investment opportunities, new jobs and a significant boost to their local economy.

North Yorkshire County Councillor George Jabbour said: “York is the optimal location for the new Great British Railways' headquarters. With its highly-skilled population, unrivalled rail history and current prominent role as a leading national rail centre, York is ready to welcome Great British Railways to its future.

"Rail has been so important to our county throughout its history. Yorkshire has some of the most beautiful tourist destinations in the whole world. Without the extensive rail links that we have enjoyed, we would not have been as successful in attracting such a large number of visitors to God's Own County every year from every corner of the globe.

"While we all know that York is the natural home of GBR HQ, we need to show our support online because the outcome of the public vote is critical in determining who the ultimate winner is.
