Penicillin Sent Leeds for Distribution

Twenty million units of penicillin arrived at Leeds General Infirmary yesterday in a shilling-stamped postal packet, an unimportant looking cardboard box apart from the registration marks.

This was the first consignment supplied by the Ministry of Health under the Ministry’s scheme for distribution through centres to other hospitals in the region which have not the laboratory facilities that there are Leeds for preparing the drug for use.

Penicillin has been used in the Infirmary for some time past. The packet delivered to the Infirmary dispensary yesterday contained 20 blue-labelled boxes, each about the size of a packet of 10 cigarettes.

Each box contained 10 tubes, and In each tube were ten tablets of 10,000 units.

The drug, which has vast possibilities for the treatment of wounds and infections, will be prepared for use with a cream base, In sterile solution and for injection.
