Classical preview: Concert club's new season

Take a look at the artists who have appeared at Ilkley's King's Hall, and you will find a catalogue of the greatest classical musicians who have lived over the past seven decades, and that long list continues to grow over the coming year, for Ilkley Concert Club's 72nd season.

It opens with the celebrated French pianist, Francois-Frederic Guy, in an evening of Beethoven sonatas (October 11).

“I just don’t know where they find the money to attract such famous names,” says one other local concert promoter seeing the name of the Dutch mezzo, Christianne Stotijn and her accompanist, Julius Drake, who will perform lieder by Brahms, Mahler and Dvorak (December 13).

“Probably the world’s finest brass group,” wrote one critic following a concert by Septura Brass, a group of the leading players from the London orchestras, the review continued, “their virtuosity is mind-blowing”. They bring a wide-ranging choice of music from Baroque to the 20th Century (February 14).

Certainly one of the most elegant violinists on today’s recital stage, Alina Ibragimova, and the pianist, Cedric Tiberghien, join in the Brahms Violin Sonatas (April 11), while the ever popular Schubert Ensemble play Bruch and Dvorak (March 14).

Always pleased to offer a stage to up-and-coming artists, the young Ruisi Quartet play string quartets by Haydn, Fischer, Britten and Debussy (January 10).
