Yorkshire on top as rookie Ashraf helps skittle Notts out for 59

YORKSHIRE bowling coach Steve Oldham believes pace star Moin Ashraf has a golden future after the teenager helped blow away Nottinghamshire for 59 at Trent Bridge yesterday – the lowest County Championship total against Yorkshire for 31 years.

Ashraf claimed 2-11 from six overs on his maiden Championship appearance as Yorkshire took charge of their must-win game against the First Division leaders, closing a dramatic opening day on 260-8 in their first innings after captain Andrew Gale (147 not out) played a brilliant hand.

Ashraf, an 18-year-old right-armer from Bradford, displayed a cool head to reduce Nottinghamshire from 18-2 to 18-4 after Gale won the toss on a seamer's pitch.

Ashraf bowled Nottinghamshire's overseas batsman Adam Voges with the penultimate delivery of his third over. And with the final ball of his next over, he had Samit Patel caught behind to leave Nottinghamshire in disarray.

With Oliver Hannon-Dalby and Ajmal Shahzad also on top form, taking four wickets apiece, Nottinghamshire were routed for the lowest Championship score against Yorkshire since Warwickshire were dismissed for 35 at Sheffield in 1979.

Oldham, who has an enviable track record for developing quality pace bowlers, predicted Ashraf could go on to big things.

"He's a cracking lad and a terrific prospect," said Oldham, who has brought through the likes of Darren Gough and Matthew Hoggard during his time at the club.

"To be fair, Moin has been bowling well all year but he's had a bit of soreness in his elbow and that's the only reason he hasn't played in the first team earlier.

"He's got all the attributes – good pace and control, a smooth action – and he's a very polite lad who's eager to learn.

"In many ways he's quite old-fashioned and I've got a lot of time for him."

Oldham also has high regard for Hannon-Dalby, another youngster who has done well in his debut season.

"Oliver has done everything that's been asked of him and he's another great prospect," added Oldham. "It's all about giving youngsters like Oliver and Moin opportunities because they will only get better from time in the middle."
