England international Bower was out in one under par with the aid of a couple of birdies, but dropped four shots on the back nine while retrieving just one.

Thomson, who played the courses in the alternate order, carded 73 74 and included an eagle three at the fifth at Royal Porthcawl.

The Yorkshire players who missed out on the match play element of the Amateur championship were Shipley’s Will Whiteoak, who slipped to an 81 with two sevens on his card after opening with a 68; Moortown’s David Houlding (75 75); The Oaks’ James Walker (75 78) and Hull’s Steve Robins (75 79).
