But they only prevailed on a last-nine countback after four pairings had tied at the top with the impressive score of 65.

Two Hornsea duos - EuroPro Tour player Steve Uzzell and Mark Cooke, and the club's professional Stretton Wright and his 18-year-old son Nathan, carded the same score.

Their disappointment at missing out on the top prize at Filey will have been slightly assuaged by their scores stretching Hornsea's lead in the race to be the season's top club.

With one fixture of the 10 remaining, at Driffield on March 9, they head Hessle GC by 14 shots, the latter's best scores at Filey having been a 66 and a 68.

Hornsea should win the title barring an extraordinary turnaround at Driffield, although Stretton Wright, who is also the club's Director of Golf, was left to rue a few missed opportunities that would have given him and his son victory on the day at Filey and furthered Hornsea's title cause.

"We had two silly dropped shots from nowhere on holes 8 and 11," he commented. "We also had a few left right on line, but in the freezing cold conditions - as we finished at 5.40pm - we were quite happy."

The Wrights were also unfortunately led to believe they had won on a last-six countback, only to find out just before the presentation they had been pipped by one shot on the back-nine assessment.

"It was such a shame as it would have been great to win with Nathan," said Stretton Wright, whose son hopes to follow in his footsteps and become a professional.

"Next time, it will have to be. The great news though was that Hornsea are now 14 clear with one event remaining. It would be great if we could have some Hornsea members cheering us on at Driffield on March 9."

Boothferry GC's Darren Farnsworth and Jonny Sumner also shot 65 only to miss out on the countback.
