The 1,000-1 win as Rotherham rider defies odds

Jump jockey Joe Palmowski is the toast of horse racing this week after his miracle win on Madam Lilibet.

The mare, trained at Brompton on Swale by Sharon Watt, was so far adrift of her rivals at Carlisle that her odds drifted out to an unlikely 1,000-1.

Yet this did not deter the trainer’s husband Bill from staking £4 on a remarkable win before the horse responded to her never-say-die rider’s perseverance. “It’s so typical of Bill, the jammy so and so,” said Rotherham-born Palmowski who was recording just the sixth win of his burgeoning career.

The rider, who recently beat racing record-breaker AP McCoy in a tight finish, was Rotherham United’s mascot when they won a Wembley cup final in 1996.
