Steelers prepare for special celebration

Sheffield Steelers are set to roll back the years by putting on a Festival of Hockey as a curtain raiser for the 2011-12 Elite League season.

The celebrations will take place before the start of the new campaign which the Steelers will hope to go into as defending league and play-off champions.

The event will see them join forces with the Cardiff Devils - also owned by Steelers’ chief Paul Ragan - and who will be celebrating their 25th anniversary. Highlights will include a team of Steelers’ legends led by Ron Shudra taking on a team of all-time greats from Cardiff, captained by John Lawless. The two teams will then meet for a second time in Cardiff and do it all over again.

Earlier in the day, junior teams from Sheffield will take on their Cardiff counterparts and, in the early evening, it will be supporters’ first chance to see the new Sheffield Steelers team for the 2011-12 season taking on Cardiff’s brand new line up.

Tickets for the event - for which a specific date is yet to be confirmed - will go on sale at the end of the current Elite League season.

Steelers and the Devils meet twice this weekend in back-to-back fixtures, the outcome of which will prove pivotal in the race for the regular season title.
