No golden moment for Hull FC but plenty of positives to take - Gareth Ellis

It finished 14-14 after Jake Mamo scored with about 10 seconds to go – and then no one could score in Golden Point.

Both sides had their chances – nine drop goal attempts in total, I think – and they were all missed.

For us at Hull FC it does feel like an opportunity gone to carry on our winning start to the year.

The fact we were winning with 10, 20 seconds to go on the clock leaves us walking away feeling like we’ve missed out on the chance to get another victory.

However, when you look at the question marks that have been around Hull FC for a few years now – that soft underbelly, caving in when the pressure is on, when the blowtorch heats up and not being able to knuckle down – well, for me, if you look at that side of the game, I do think it is a huge move in the right direction. There was times when we were clinging on, we were surviving and just hanging in there when Warrington were on top.

But we found a way to get back – and into a winning position.

Ultimately, we just switched off for a split second as can so often happen – they are the fine margins between winning and losing – and it did slip away.

Yet we got the point and if I stepped out of my Hull shoes, it probably was a fair result.

For us, Jordan Lane was outstanding. He’s played the first few games in the middle at 13 and been really impressive there with his industry and the quality of his work.

But with Manu Ma’u being injured he was asked to play in his more familiar position of second-row yesterday.

He came up with some absolutely belting moments. He split Warrington a few times and showed some real pace, too.

He did that in a game last year when he got through and rounded the full-back to score himself. Jordan does run some great lines.

He put Jake (Connor) in for a try yesterday with one break and another saw Carlos (Tuimavave) get over.

But he was outstanding with his defence efforts as well, as was the majority of the team, to be fair. Jordan was probably the stand-out player and a deserved man of the match, though.

From a spectacle point of view, the Golden Point can be quite appealing. I don’t know if it was yesterday, though. The way the two teams went at each other for 80 minutes, it then just became a bit of a drive-a-thon to get yourself in position to try and kick a drop goal. It probably wasn’t the spectacle that the concept was created for.

Essentially, both sides went on for another 10 minutes we didn’t need to do and came up with the same result that we had after 80. At least it wasn’t like the Challenge Cup the week before where Cas and Hull KR went on for four periods until Cas eventually scored.

Still, particularly at the minute when we have short turnarounds and players who can’t recover properly – with no ice baths and swimming recovery at the moment – this is probably another stress on the bodies that we can do without.

Next up, we’ve got Wakefield Trinity on Friday before we go back-to-back against Wigan.

Wakefield are a side we have often struggled with in the past. They have that gritty determination to perform and that’s been present since I played there 20 years ago.

We’ll expect a really tough game from them. We’ll prepare the best we can and it will be another test for us.

While we might feel a little dejected and disappointed we didn’t come away with a win yesterday, we have a quick chance to use it as a springboard for another victory.
