SkyBet: It could be worth a shot twinning Cardiff City with the Gunners

The significant action in the Premier League all takes place this afternoon and there is an intriguing game at the Britannia Stadium, where Peter Crouch should make his Stoke City debut at home to Liverpool.

The Anfield club have received all the plaudits for their summer transfer activity, but Stoke have bought well too and will produce plenty of good results this season.

They are unbeaten in seven competitive games since beginning their European campaign in July and look good to land odds of 9-4.

Manchester United have started the season so well they are as short as 2-5 to beat Bolton at the Reebok – if short-priced favourites are not your thing then look instead to back in-form Ashley Young to find the net.

The former Villa man has been straying inside from the wing to great effect and his partnership with Wayne Rooney is potentially devastating.

Another goalscorer to keep an eye on is Emmanuel Adebayor, who is a good bet to mark his Tottenham debut with a goal at Wolves.

Arsenal are 4-11 to beat Swansea at the Emirates, a price which attaches too much significance to their abysmal showing at Old Trafford.

In the Championship, Sven Goran Eriksson’s Leicester City should hand a debut to new signing Jermaine Beckford as they visit Barnsley – the former Leeds United man struggled in the Premier League but will be a major force at this level.

Cardiff should prove too strong for Doncaster and at 4-7 could be doubled with Arsenal.

Leeds have been playing well of late – despite their 2-1 defeat at Ipswich – but I’m in no hurry to back them at odds on to beat Crystal Palace, who have started well and won 1-0 at Hull in their last away game.

The Tigers have won two and lost three and today face the task of keeping a potent Peterborough United at bay. The Posh are joint leading scorers with 12 goals in five games and have won their last four league games at London Road. Back them to make it five in a row.

Huddersfield Town’s unbeaten run continues and today they face a surprise package at the Galpharm Stadium.

Tranmere were among the pre-season favourites for relegation having narrowly escaped last time around, but they have started well and recorded an impressive 2-0 win at Brentford a fortnight ago.

Huddersfield should have the class to beat them, but 4-6 looks a little skinny.

Sheffield United brushed aside Bury last weekend to maintain their flying start and are an attractive price of 6-4 to win at Scunthorpe, who are without in-form striker Bobby Grant.

United’s neighbours Wednesday face leaders MK Dons at Hillsborough, bidding for a fourth straight home win.

The Owls battled back well to earn a point at Charlton on Monday and limited a bright attacking side to very few chances.

They will need to do the same again as the Dons are the country’s leading scorers with 15 goals in six games.

Bristol Rovers are the visitors to Valley Parade today, looking to get back on track after a run of three successive away defeats in which they have conceded 10 goals. I would not expect Bradford to inflict a heavy defeat on them, but they are marginal favourites after going three games unbeaten.

Dagenham’s six league games so far have all been tight, with a total of only eight goals scored.

They are solid enough at the back, but do not boast a goalscoring threat, so there should not be too much excitement when they face Rotherham at Don Valley.

The weekend’s best bets...

Stoke to beat Liverpool.

Bolton v Man Utd – Ashley Young to score.

Wolves v Tottenham – Adebayor to score.

Arsenal to beat Swansea.

Barnsley v Leicester – Jermaine Beckford to score.

Cardiff to beat Doncaster.

Peterborough to beat Hull.

Sheffield United to beat Scunthorpe.

MK Dons to beat Sheffield Wednesday.
