Doncaster Knights' Tyson Lewis aims to make up for milestone misery in play-offs

The winger scored two fine tries as Doncaster built a 12-0 advantage against the league leaders in Sunday’s televised top-two contest.

However, he was powerless as Bristol came back to win #
31-29 deep into stoppage-time with the very final play of a fascinating match.

“It is a killer to lose in the last play of the game like that,” admitted Lewis, who had been facing former England winger Tom Varndell.

“It is a gut-wrencher but there’s games we will win in the last, dying seconds and we’ve just got to take it on the chin and move on.

“We’ll probably face them again in the play-offs. It’s one we’ll bottle up and, hopefully, come better off the next time we do.”

It was Doncaster’s first league defeat in 13 games but they remain in second and are confident of finishing the season well.

Having won at Bristol earlier in campaign – one of just two sides to beat the big-spending West Countrymen in the league – they realise they have the tools.

On his own contribution, the former Blackheath wideman who arrived at the South Yorkshire club from Plymouth Albion in 2012, added: “It was good to score like that. It’s always good to get tries as a winger and even better when it’s your 100th game.

“I’m just gutted for the boys we couldn’t pull it off at the end.

“Every team in this league you have to give them respect and you look down Bristol’s teamsheet and it is a ‘Who’s Who?’ of rugby.

“They had a British Lion playing for them and a Premiership top try-scorer. But we had to come out and impose ourselves and for 70 minutes we did.

“Little things probably let us down. We were a bit lax at the breakdown and we got our comeuppance there.

“We’ll have to put right during the week but we’ll come back better on Friday when we head down to Moseley.”

Lewis, 30, fared well against former Bath wideman Varndell and Samoan legend David Lemi was on the other flank.

“It’s always good to be able to pit yourself against the best,” he admitted. “To get two tries as well I can’t ask for more – apart from getting the win.

“In terms of my best in those 100 so far there’s been a fair few but I think this was quite good. We played well and threw the ball around and it was just that last pass at the end that got us but we will be bigger and better next time.”
