All Huddersfield Town supporters know the impossible is possible, says David Wagner

The Terriers claimed a precious point from a goalless draw with Manchester City, in the process becoming the first club to prevent the champions from scoring in front of their own fans at the Etihad in the league this season.

In terms of the battle to avoid the drop the stalemate nudged Huddersfield three points clear of both Southampton and third-bottom Swansea City with just two games remaining.

“We will need more,” said Wagner when asked by The Yorkshire Post if 36 points will be enough to secure safety.

“We cannot rely on anyone, we must only trust ourselves. We have every reason to look forward to our next game (Chelsea away on Wednesday), even though it is against difficult opponents.

“Everyone who supports Huddersfield Town knows that the impossible is possible. This looked impossible against Manchester City before kick-off, but the players have done it and made the impossible possible.”

Swansea host Southampton tomorrow night before rounding off their campaign at the Liberty Stadium against Stoke City. Southampton, meanwhile, host City on the final day when the Terriers tackle Arsenal at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The value of yesterday’s point will become truly apparent later this week. For now, though, Wagner believes his players deserve huge credit for a result that he believes is every bit as impressive as last October’s 2-1 win over Manchester United.

He said: “From my point of view, this was on the same level. A clean sheet and point against Manchester City away is the same as (beating) Manchester United because of the crucial time of the season.”

He added: “City are so fluid and so good, this is why for me it is at the same level as United because it came at the right time.”

As for tomorrow’s game between Swansea and Southampton, Wagner insists no particular result will suit Town more than another.

“I don’t rely on anyone,” he said when asked if a home or away win would help Town’s chances.

“We have to make our own work. I expect us to need further points and that is all we are focused on.

“Before this game we had three big, big opponents, two points ahead, but now we have two big, big opponents with a three-point advantage.”
