Workington Town 22 York City Knights 18: Struggling York remain adrift after Town loss

York City Knights came up just short in their do-or-die battle at Derwent Park.

They needed more than a bonus point to give themselves a chance of avoiding the drop and are four points adrift of both Hunslet and Barrow with two games to play.

The Knights had been leading 6-4 with a well-taken try by Ed Smith which Tom Carr converted.

But Town, who had led with a second-minute try from Declan Hulme, regained the advantage when Callum Phillips went over.

Just before the break, Hulme pounced on a York error to score his second, while two tries at the start of the second-half got York level – Sam Latus and Sam Scott going over. Carr added a penalty on 52 minutes to edge the Knights ahead. But, in the 66th minute, Town scored the winner when Peter Lupton put Jason Mossop in at the corner, with Kayle Connor converting.
