Wakefield Trinity v Bradford Bulls - Stars return for Trinity Challenge Cup run

WAKEFIELD TRINITY head coach Chris Chester needs no reminding of the danger Bradford Bulls pose his side in their Challenge Cup fifth round tie tonight.

The Championship club stunned Leeds Rhinos in last year’s competition and will fancy their chances of repeating the feat at Belle Vue.

Chester – who played when Hull FC shocked Leeds in the 2005 Challenge Cup final under current Bradford coach John Kear – realises they cannot be under-estimated and that is illustrated by the squad he has selected.

Wakefield are not resting any of their stars. In fact, they are bringing two – Danny Brough and David Fifita – back from injury for the potentially tricky contest.

“We don’t have a game until Sunday next week and we want to try and get some confidence from this one,” said Chester, after his side fell to a Golden Point extra-time loss against Hull FC at the same ground last Friday.

“We saw first hand last year what Bradford could do in a one-off game, beating Leeds at Odsal, so we certainly won’t be taking them lightly.

“We will be treating them like we treat any other team and preparing like we are playing a Super League team.”

Kear, of course, also worked with Chester when he was director of rugby at Wakefield in 2017 before returning to a head coach role at fallen giants Bradford.

“John’s a great fella, a good coach and he always gets his lads up for the Challenge Cup,” said Chester, with his counterpart having also famously won the competition with Sheffield Eagles in 1998.

“They will get the respect they deserve. There’s only two competitions to play for and this is one of them.

“It’s knockout and we’ve just got to make sure we are in the hat on Monday for the next round.”

Wakefield fought back from 20-6 down to take their game against Hull into extra-time only to miss out to Marc Sneyd’s drop goal.

Chester has urged his side to improve their discipline in order to avoid getting in such positions.

He added: “The last three games we’ve given 17 yardage penalties away and that is a lot of cheap possession.”
