Smith faces time out after Kear left fuming

FURIOUS Wakefield coach John Kear is unlikely to select Jeremy Smith in the coming weeks after the experienced Kiwi was sin-binned for a second game running yesterday, writes Dave Craven.

The former New Zealand international was yellow carded for persistent offside in the 65th minute as Trinity crashed to a 52-18 home defeat against Hull FC but he had also earlier been penalised for criticising referee James Child.

Smith, 29, had only played four games this season after injury and visa problems blighted his move from Salford but started the contest well, setting up their two opening tries to forge an early 12-0 lead.

However, Kear was disgusted when, with Hull already taking complete control and Trinity badly struggling in the intense heat, he abused Child and was swiftly marched off.

Hull ran in three more tries while Smith - sin-binned for dissent in last week’s heavy loss at Harlequins - was absent.

“We’d hardly had any ball,” said Kear.

“We’d had five sets in 25 minutes and in weather like this that kills you.

“We had no energy and then we had a player – the same player – sin-binned again so he obviously hasn’t helped his mates out and we’ve just got blown away by 34 points in the second half.

“The point I’m making will be much more blatant to everyone next week (who it is) as obviously the words were not heeded and the discipline didn’t improve so there has got to be a consequence.

“He was done for repeated offside. The referee indicated to the player that, then he chirped back, they got a penalty, and then he continued to be offside.”

Wakefield had trailed just 16-12 at the break but were no match for Hull in the second period as they fell away through poor discipline and defence.

Kear questioned his side’s commitment to the cause and said: “I’m feeling disappointment, embarrassment – at that second half – and frustration.

“We’ve gone from a team early in the season of young men trying to make their way in the game who didn’t always win or didn’t always play well but always looked like they were giving their all and trying.”
