McClennan relishing opportunity to lead the Exiles to more glory

Former Leeds Rhinos coach Brian McClennan says England’s national side has more depth than ever before as he prepares to reunite himself with the Exiles.

The charismatic New Zealander, who led Leeds to successive Grand Final wins in 2008 and 2009, has been put in charge of the team which comprises the best overseas talent in Super League.

McClennan coached the Exiles to victory over England in the inaugural Origin fixture two years ago and will return to resume that role ahead of the June 14 showdown at Warrington.

Currently out of work after being sacked by NRL club New Zealand Warriors towards the end of last season, the man who led the Kiwis to a famous 2005 Tri-Nations triumph is relishing the opportunity.

“The Origin game is a fantastic concept and with the Rugby League World Cup on the horizon this year’s match is going to have more riding on it than ever before,” he said.

“It’s a hugely important fixture for England as they look towards the World Cup and for all the Kiwi and Aussie boys in Super League it has special meaning.

“Many of them know that they aren’t going to be considered for rep’ footy when they sign for a Super League club and the Exiles gives them that chance.

“I had a great time two years ago. It was a lot of fun for everyone involved with it and I’m looking forward to replicating the spirit we had in camp in 2011.”

Last year, with ex-St Helens chief Daniel Anderson in charge, the contest was expanded to a two-game drawn series but the intensity was certainly diluted.

Anderson has now taken over the NRL’s referee’s department, opening the way for McClennan, who also won the 2008 World Club Challenge with Leeds before leaving at the end of 2010, to make his mark once more.

“One match is just about right and I think we’ll see even more intense competition,” he said.

“England have more depth now than they’ve ever had and that can only be a good thing for Steve McNamara.

“There are also a lot of very talented overseas players and I think the chance to play for the Exiles will see them up their game even more.”
