Hunslet Hawks 32 South Wales 24: March hopes to keep Hunslet squad after promotion success

Hunslet's player-coach Paul March hopes to keep the vast majority of his squad for next season after clinching the Co-operative Championship One trophy.

The scrum-half said: "Some players always leave but I would like to think I will keep 90 per cent of the squad.

"I knew a lot of the players when I came here 18 months ago and the players know my coaching methods, and at the start of the season I just wanted the players to be consistent, and they have done that.

"We had a blip at home to Oldham but we put that right by putting 60 points past them away from home, and we were outstanding in the first half here against South Wales.

"Obviously, we will face a better standard in the Championship next season but I also hope we will have a better standard of refereeing because he let South Wales back into the match in the second half."

The only negative on an afternoon of positives for the Hawks was a potential broken leg for the strong-running Scott Woodcock.

The substitute had scored one of the Hawks' four first-half tries and was seeing plenty of the ball early in the second half when he cried out in pain after being tackled, and was helped off the field in a very gingerly fashion.

Hunslet's other first-half tries came from centres Dave Clayton and Wayne McHugh and second row and skipper Steve Dooler, David March adding all four goals.

McHugh fell one try short of equalling Tom Limb's club record of 29 tries, set in 1994-95.

South Wales managed a try by full-back Elliott Kear on the stroke of half-time, and added further tries by livewire Steve Parry, Andrew Gay and Lewis Mills in the second half.

James Houston got the Hawks' sole try in the second half, David March adding a goal and a conversion.
