Herbert’s arrival is good news for Bulls as Trinity wilt

Assistant coach Francis Cummins feels Bradford are moving forward following their 40-18 win over rock-bottom Wakefield.

Frankie Mariano gave the Wildcats an early lead, but the hosts hit back superbly with tries from Tom Olbison and two scores from Shad Royston and Craig Kopczak.

Luke George pulled one back for the visitors but Shaun Ainscough and Kopczak’s third of the afternoon ensured there was no way back – despite Kieran Hyde crossing for Wakefield at the death.

Cummins said: “We’ve taken a step in the right direction. I think we’ve improved on where we were last week and the first few weeks

“It’s good to score some tries because, at the start of the season, we were relying on our kicks to score.

“We’re really happy we’ve taken a step forward as a team and although I think we were outplayed at times, we can rein that in.

“I’m glad that we’ve got the skills to try things, but we’ve got to keep practising and get a bit more game sense around us.”

Cummins was also quick to praise hat-trick hero Kopczak, as well as Marc Herbert after the scrum-half’s successful debut.

Cummins added: “Herby gives us a lot more now and there’s not as much pressure on Brett Kearney.

“But then again we’ve got a new half-back and we’ve got two new lads to play with each other so it’s a little like starting again.

“I’m really pleased for Koppy because he works really hard off the ball and I think he put himself in some great positions to score the tries.

“He’s done really well as a front-row forward to support as he does – he’s been doing that for a few weeks and I think he’s reaped the rewards today.”

Glenn Morrison dropped the ball after crossing the try-line when Wakefield trailed by just six points and, although Tinity coach John Kear admitted it may have had a bearing on the encounter, he refused to dwell on the matter.

“Obviously it influences the game, it goes from 12-6 to 12-12 and that’s probably when Bradford had the best period of the game and that’s when they really dominated and took the game away from us,” he said.

“But one incident isn’t the be-all and end-all of the game. We also let Craig Kopczak score a hat-trick and he shouldn’t be coming through our on-line defence as easily as he did.”
