Guest Column - Danny Orr: Castleford homecoming is perfect boost for the Orr family

More than 13 years after shooting to prominence with Castleford Tigers, Harlequins Danny Orr has announced he will make an emotional return to his hometown club in 2011.

SINCE I left Castleford I've probably been asked more than a thousand times 'When are you coming back?'

My dad, who still goes down to watch quite regularly with my grandad, has the same thing every time as well.

I always said 'never say never' and now the opportunity has come around.

I had a couple of other offers but as soon as Cas were interested my mind was made up.

Cas has always been my team. I was brought up there, supported them since I was seven and it feels right to be going back.

My parents are pleased – more because they can see the kids than anything – and my wife is ready to come home after three years in Wigan and four in London.

I didn't realise at first but next season looks like being the last at Wheldon Road so it'll be nice to play a part in that too. I'm working out which piece I can get as memorabilia.

It's unbelievable how fast it's gone since I debuted there. When you're coming through as a young lad of 17 people always say 'Make the most of it, it goes so quick.'

I never believed it and thought I've got 15 years before I have to worry about that. But I'm 32 now and here I am.

I've had such a good time though and, for someone like myself who just loves rugby, it is the best job in the world.

I've been lucky. I've been at three great clubs – Cas, Wigan and Harlequins – and wouldn't change a thing.

As for where I'll fit in, I left as a stand-off and played most of my career there and at seven but I'm playing a lot at hooker now for Quins.

Hopefully my versatility will aid Cas, I can help take some pressure off Rangi Chase, Ryan Hudson and Ryan McGoldrick and add some experience.

I might be doing some coaching with the youngsters as well. I'm currently doing my Level Three and I've helped Latham (Tawhai) coach the Quins Under-21s for the last couple of years.

I enjoy doing it and there's plenty of talented kids at Tigers. I don't know if I want to go down that path after I've finished playing but if I've got the qualifications it's an option.

There's still a few lads around from when I left in 2003 – Razza (Hudson) and Craig Huby who made his debut in that final year before I went to Wigan. He was only 16 and I remember handing him the ball so he could kick a nice easy penalty in front of the posts that day.

Michael Shenton was just coming through the Academy but the physio Russell Jones and Matthew Merrick, who used to bring the tee on for me, remain and assistant Andy Hay who I'm good mates with having played against him for years.

First of all though I've a job to do with Quins for the rest of the season. We're up in West Yorkshire at Huddersfield on Sunday and they've got some awesome players.

I played with the likes of Kev Brown and Luke Robinson at Wigan. They never got the opportunity they should have done there, especially Kev who has gone on to show what a great player he is making his England debut last month. We'll have to watch him.
