Giants’ loss still offers positives for Anderson

Anderson saw his team throw away a 10-point lead to lose 30-22 at the DW Stadium but is confident he has seen enough from his players to keep hold of fourth place come the end of the Super 8s.

He said: “I thought we caused them problems. Our start was very good and probably the best we have had in a long, long time. We completed really hard and the scoreline showed we competed.

“For the middle period, their bench was a little bit better than ours was. I thought we conceded some soft tries if I am being honest but the shape we threw at them offensively proves there are some good signs.

“Everyone will want to win every game and get as many points as they can to get into that four. We have missed an opportunity here but we get another opportunity tomorrow because if some teams do us some favours we could still end the weekend in the four still.”

Wigan assistant coach John Winder hailed the maturity of stand-off George Williams and the work rate of Liam Farrell.

Two tries in the space of two minutes with Williams creating one and finishing another saw the Warriors lead 18-10 and although they never let go of that lead again they were still pushed all the way and were made to work hard for victory.

Winder said: “We probably didn’t start as well as we wanted to and Huddersfield were good in that first 20 minutes and got out to a 10-0 lead. We had to show some character to get back into the game. We were under the pump from the minute go.

“I thought young George showed some maturity in the game and came up with some big individual plays and I though Liam Farrell was very good, he had some good touches and looked a class second rower. His work rate was outstanding as well.”
