Eight-try haul allows Halifax to stay in hunt

KARL Harrison’s in-form Halifax did their utmost to keep the pressure on at the top of the Championship thanks to a comfortable victory at stuttering Swinton Lions.

Halifax were in good nick in bagging eight tries at Leigh Sports Village, with this latest win keeping Harrison’s team within just two points off second-placed Featherstone, who had to come from behind to win at Whitehaven.

Steve Tyrer was again in terrific form with the boot, too, adding conversions to every touchdown.

Halifax managed to keep Swinton at bay in the first half and Paul Mennell got the visitors up and running with an early try, only for the Lions to respond with an Ed Barber touchdown.

Mick Nanyn kicked the first of his five conversions.

Tommy Saxton and Gareth Potts went over for the visitors, but again the Lions hit back, Brad Dwyer’s converted try cutting Halifax’s lead to 18-12.

Just before the interval, scrum-half Ben Johnson scooted over for the first of his two tries, the second of which came just after the restart as the lead was stretched to 30-12.

Scott Murrell got in on the act as his converted score made it 
36-12, only for Kevin Penny to pull one back almost immediately for the hosts.

Luke Adamson and Ross Divorty increased Halifax’s score, before they allowed Luke Menzies and Mike Morrison to close the game with converted tries.
