Coach Simon Woolford frustrated after Huddersfield Giants fail to see game out against Leeds Rhinos

STUNNED HUDDERSFIELD Giants coach Simon Woolford said his side learned some “hard lessons” from their 27-26 defeat by Leeds Rhinos.

In the sides’ first game since March, Giants led 26-6 with 12 minutes remaining, but Leeds levelled two minutes from time and Luke Gale won the match for them with a golden point drop goal.

“We should have had it wrapped up,” said Woolford afterwards.

“We did a lot of good stuff in that first 60-65 minutes.

“They didn’t really look like scoring a try after their first one, our goal line defence and our scramble was good, but this game goes for 80 minutes and when they got one on us, for some reason, we lost our way both with the footy and without it.”

Leeds chanced their arm late on and coach Richard Agar revealed: “We sent the message out to play freely and throw everything you can at them.

“We got Cuthbo (Adam Cuthbertson) back on there with 10 minutes to go to try and give us a bit more of a passing game and some offloading in the middle.

“We had him and Cam Smith operating in there too and at 26-6 you haven’t got too much to lose.

“It was a case of throw caution to the wind and play as much football as you can.

“I personally didn’t think there was enough time to get back, but once you post two back-to-back tries and get within a couple of scores, that does start to create a bit of doubt in the opposition.”

St Helens, who face Leeds on Sunday, ran in six tries in a one-sided 34-6 defeat of Catalans.

Lachlan Coote bagged two tries and five goals and James Bentley, Zeb Taia, Tommy Makinson and Alex Walmsley also touched down.
