'Chinese lantern' dangers

This picture shows the risk the NFU has been complaining about – a 'Chinese lantern' which landed in a fully ripe wheat crop at Grimston Grange in Tadcaster last weekend.

Selby Mart auctioneer Brian Bartle, who sent in the picture, said: "There is evidence of scorch marks on the fabric, and the crop's pretty dry, so the worst could have happened – let alone the risk of the wire frame being engorged by the combine and chopped up with the grain, to be a danger of getting into the food chain.

"There was another one on the same farm two weeks ago. That was found in grazed grass and could have been mown into the silage pit to leave a beast 'wired' and cause a slow death."
