Carney banned for third time in four months

JUSTIN Carney’s frustrating debut season for Castleford Tigers continued last night after he was handed his third suspension in only four months, writes Dave Craven.

The hard-running Australian winger, nicknamed ‘The Beast’ for his robust style, has quickly endeared himself to the Wheldon Road faithful with a series of eye-catching displays since joining from Sydney Roosters.

However, equally so, they must be becoming slightly miffed by the 30-year-old’s disciplinary problems.

Carney had already been banned for two games in March after being cited for punching and sat out a further two games in April after being found guilty of a dangerous throw.

He pleaded guilty last night to another dangerous throw offence on London Broncos’ Shane Rodney and will now miss the West Yorkshire club’s next three Super League games starting at Leeds Rhinos on Friday.

Carney had scored seven tries in their last five games but the out-of-favour Richie Owen is now likely to get a rare chance to stake a claim.

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have made a notable signing for next season by capturing Wigan’s second-row Chris Tuson on a two-year deal.

The Academy product, 23, has upset the Super League leaders by turning down their offer of a three-year contract in preference for a move to Belle Vue.

He has made more than 70 appearances for Wigan, including the 2011 World Club Challenge, having also spent time on loan at Castleford.

“It’s been a bit of a strange one because I’ve been at Wigan all my life so I’ve never signed for another team and that’s obviously new to me,” said Tuson, who played in their 36-23 win at Trinity on Sunday.

“I spoke to (Wakefield full-back) Richard Mathers because I know him from when he used to play at Wigan and he said good things.”
