Bradford Bulls 10 London Broncos 20: London end Odsal losing run to leave Cummins fuming

Coach Tony Rea claimed London Broncos’ first Super League victory in more than four months was vital, not just to team morale, but in his club’s quest for survival.

The Broncos, bottom of the table and so far without a ground for next season, ended a long losing streak dating back to April 27th with their 20-10 win over Bradford – their first victory at Odsal since 2009.

Rea said: “It was important, it was gutsy and we’ve stuck together as a group for a long time and it got us rewards today.

“It certainly helps our cause – it lifts everyone at the club and keeps everyone enthused about what we are doing.”

Meanwhile, Bradford boss Francis Cummins described the Bulls role in an error-strewn game as “awful”.

“It was a very disappointing loss,” he said.

“We looked like we had a few players give up – which they didn’t – but a lot of the time we defended big sets, only to throw the ball back to them.

“We defended well but you can’t make 18 errors, we’re talking about 40 per cent completion. We let ourselves down today.”

The Bulls, having failed to make the end of season play-offs for the fifth successive season, have now lost eight of their last 10 games and were playing largely for pride.

The scene was set for a dour encounter when both sides bombed good chances and it was not until five minutes before half time that the deadlock was broken through a David Howell try for London.

Soward, who went on to add two goals, failed with the conversion and shortly after the break Bradford bounced back when Keith Lulia scored in the corner and Jamie Foster converted.

The Bulls lead lasted almost to the hour mark but two London tries in three minutes left the Broncos in the ascendancy.

Howell rose to catch and ground a Soward kick and then Soward himself sprinted away from halfway after intercepting a stray Luke Gale pass. Caton-Brown added a further try to seal the Broncos’ first win at Odsal in four years before Danny Addy claimed a late consolation.

Soward blotted his copy-book by being sin-binned for needlessly kicking the ball off of the tee as Foster lined up the final conversion attempt.
