Akaidere double helps Dewsbury take sting out of visiting Hornets

A Jamaine Akaidere double was the icing on the cake for Warren Jowitt as his Dewsbury Rams bowed out of the Northern Rail Cup with victory over Rochdale Hornets.

The hosts dominated the first half, scoring four tries, and two more followed after the interval, as they sealed three points.

The Rams set about putting last weekend’s disappointing second-half display behind them from the outset and within 60 seconds, they were over the line.

Scott Spaven’s high bomb was collected by Patch Walker who delivered a tremendous flick out to Dwayne Barker.

Barker found Ayden Faal and the centre touched down in the corner.

Former Super League prop Steve Crossley was next across the line when he pounced on another Spaven kick, this one falling directly into his path after making contact with the posts.

Rochdale appeared to have weathered the Dewsbury storm but their efforts were only delaying the inevitable as Ryan Esders and Akaidere both crossed the whitewash in the minutes leading up to half time.

The home side picked up from where they left off after the break, scoring twice in the space of eight minutes through full-back James Craven and Akaidere, who darted over for his second of the afternoon.

Despite surpassing the 30-point mark, Dewsbury’s scoring rate slowed to nothing in the closing half hour and that allowed the Hornets to bag some consolation efforts.

Substitute Paul Brearley was sin-binned for an illegal tackle but just prior to that, the visitors had grabbed their first points, courtesy of, Jonny Leatheer.

Hornets then hit double figures with a late Steve McDermott touchdown, which came on the back of an embarrassing passage of errors from Dewsbury.
