Rookie Konta reaches Eastbourne’s last eight

The 24-year-old, in the Aegon International on a wild card, removed world No 8 Ekaterina Makarova on Tuesday and followed up that scalp with a 6-4 4-6 6-3 defeat of 14th seed Muguruza yesterday.

She will next face Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic, who was leading Eugenie Bouchard 6-4 3-0 before the Canadian retired hurt from their third-round clash at Devonshire Park.

Australia-born Konta is ranked 146th in the world and has been handed a wild card into Wimbledon, which begins on Monday.

Dan Evans, however, is through to the final stage of qualifying after he defeated German eighth seed Matthias Bachinger 6-4 0-6 7-5 to progress.

Evans is the sole home player through to the third and final round after Britons Josh Milton, Tara Moore, Katy Dunne and Edward Corrie were all eliminated at Roehampton.
