Rewilding tops Leger

An impressive winner of last week's Great Voltigeur Stakes at the Ebor meeting, the three-year-old will be bidding to provide Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin racing operation with a sixth victory in the Doncaster feature following Mastery's triumph 12 months ago.

The likely mount of St Leger specialist Frankie Dettori and the 7-4 favourite with the race sponsors, Rewilding would represent a first Classic win for Mahmood Al Zarooni, one of Godolphin's emerging trainers.

"Rewilding has been very well since the Great Voltigeur Stakes. The race didn't take as much out of him compared to the Derby as he didn't go to York fully wound-up," said Al Zarooni.

"The course at York suited him better. I think that he will enjoy the step up to an extended mile-and-three-quarters because he is a light horse.

"We don't do much with Rewilding at home and we pushed him too hard earlier in the season to get him ready for the Derby, which took a lot out of him.

"We know him better now and he has the class to run well."

Aidan O'Brien is looking for a fourth win in the St Leger and has left in Midas Touch, Joshua Tree and Cape Blanco – as well as likely outsiders Flying Cross, Await The Dawn and Bright Horizon.

Lincolnshire-based James Given's Gordon Stakes runner-up Dandino, as well as the respective third, fifth and sixth Arctic Cosmos, Corsica (trained by Middleham's Mark Johnston) and Theology are among the 16 entries left standing for the September 11 race.

The line-up also includes Snow Fairy, the dual English and Irish Oaks winner trained by Ed Dunlop and who was the beneficiary of two inspired rides by champion jockey Ryan Moore.

However, the filly was well-beaten by Henry Cecil's Midday in last week's Yorkshire Oaks and, while 5-1 second favourite for Doncaster, connections have some misgivings about the one and three quarter mile marathon.

"She's also in the Prix Vermeille (September 12 at Longchamp) and we want a little longer to think about it," said Dunlop.

"Before the season started we questioned whether she would stay a mile-and-a-half but at the moment stamina doesn't look like an issue so we'll see what the ground does."
