Plato leads the way into BTC climax

Four drivers will head to the Brands Hatch finale with a chance of winning the British Touring Car Championship after an eventful day's racing at Donington Park.

There were race wins for Gordon Shedden, Tom Onslow-Cole and Matt Neal, but it will be Silverline Chevrolet driver Jason Plato who will lead that trio heading to Kent in three weeks.

Plato leads Neal by 17 points, with Shedden a further four points back and Onslow-Cole a total of 24 adrift of Plato.

However, Plato, the 2001 champion, had made a terrible start to the day by crashing out of race one. The Oxfordshire racer attempted to tap old foe Neal out of the way but only succeeding in sending the Honda into a tyre barrier which then careered into Plato, knocking him and Andrew Jordan into the gravel.

That drama left Scot Shedden to claim an easy win in the other Honda ahead of the Ford of Tom Chilton and BMW's Mat Jackson.

Plato's exit meant he started race two from 19th on the grid.

At the front of the field Onslow-Cole was never headed after making a move on Shedden at the final chicane but Plato's remarkable recovery drive saw him end up on the final step of the podium.
