Trainer Bryan Smart calls time on Nunthorpe hero Alpha Delphini’s career

GROUP ONE-winning sprinter Alpha Delphini has been retired by Hambleton trainer Bryan Smart.

The horse’s finest hour came winning the 2018 Coolmore Nunthorpe at York under Graham Lee in a thriller from Mabs Cross.

Yet, after more than a year off, he returned to action this year and was not the force of old, finishing last in the Beverley Bullet on his last outing.

“His breathtaking win in the 2018 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes will live on long in the memory, not only for the way he battled all the way to the line, but also for longest wait for a photo announcement in history on a day when the world really did stand still!” the trainer said.

“Alpha will enjoy his retirement here at Hambleton House where a new career in Retraining of Racehorses showing classes beckons.”

Meanwhile 2000 Guineas hero Kameko returned to winning ways, conceding five pounds to the durable Benbatl to land a thrilling Joel Stakes at Newmarket under champion jockey Oisin Murphy.

The drop back to a mile paid off and next month’s QEII Stakes at Ascot is the target.

Today sees the Group One Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket in which Dandalla puts her unbeaten record on the line for Leyburn trainer Karl Burke.
