Moortown give leaders a scare

North Ribblesdale maintained their lead but were given a close call as they scraped a 12-10 home win over 10th-placed Moortown.

Moortown scored the only try of the match, but Ribblesdale stayed clear with four penalty goals from inside centre Steve Moon.

Moortown, 3-0 down at half-time, hit back with a try by second-row Tom Lewis. Full-back Carl Mimms converted and added a penalty.

Knottingley held on to second place with a 28-18 home victory over Pocklington, although the visitors scored two tries to one.

After the visitors had gone into an 18-15 lead, Knottingley swung the game in their favour with a try by prop Mark Sutcliffe, which Dave Evans converted as well as adding two further penalties to his five in the first half.

Former leaders Hullensians moved back up to fourth place with a 29-10 victory at Barnsley.

Hull caught Barnsley cold, going 24-3 ahead by half-time with two tries by No 8 Jason Conroy and others from fly-half John Burrell and hooker Andrew Vernon.

Andrew Appleyard, who had kicked a first-half penalty, converted Barnsley's second-half try by outside centre Arron Gaunt, but Hull had the last word with Burrell's second try.

Centre Andy Ellis scored a hat-trick of tries as Doncaster Phoenix overwhelmed Hessle 58-5 at Castle Park.

Other Phoenix tries came from Oli Clark (2), Ben Atkinson and Ben Miller, who also kicked four penalties and two conversions, with James Mortimer adding one conversion.
