Mondialiste shows class in flagship US meeting

Mondialisite, ridden by Danny Tudhope, flew home once the gaps opened in the home straight at Keeneland – but the Yorkshire combination could not catch the winner, who enjoyed the luxury of an uninterrupted passage.

At least Nawton-based O’Meara, who was saddling his first runner at the meeting, has the satisfaction that he trains one of Europe’s top milers. “We were just short of room at one stage, but he didn’t half come home well. It was a massive effort,” he said.

Tudhope endorsed this, saying of Mondialiste: “I had to wait for the gaps and he picked up incredibly well. The winner had the run of the race.”

It was a similar tale with Malton trainer Richard Fahey’s Birchwood who was third to Hit It A Bomb in the Breeders Cup Juvenile. Jockey James Doyle said: “I couldn’t really fault him.”

John Gosden blamed the rain-softened ground for Derby and Arc hero Golden Horn’s narrow defeat to Aidan O’Brien’s filly Found in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

Middleham jockey Joe Fanning, 45, recorded his 2,000th career winner when Fireglow won at Newmarket on Saturday.
