Matterson hopes to profit from Wigan's Challenge Cup woe

CASTLEFORD TIGERS bid to compound Wigan Warriors' misery tomorrow and kick-start their own Super League campaign.

Terry Matterson takes his side to DW Stadium knowing the leaders have only suffered two league losses all season.

However, the West Yorkshire club are hoping Wigan's demoralising last-minute Challenge Cup defeat at Leeds a week ago may have dented their sailing confidence.

Matterson said: "When we lost to Huddersfield in the cup last year we lost five in a row afterwards.

"We know the disappointment they'll be feeling and that emotionally these games take a lot out of you when you come up short like that.

"Plenty of other sides have suffered it too and hopefully that will be the case tomorrow.

"It can go either way and Wigan could bounce back.

"But I don't think we can really wait and see what they can bring.

"We have to bring our game and make them cope with that."

Castleford are in 10th place and in urgent need of some wins to avoid being cast adrift form the play-off places.

They lost out against Hull a fortnight ago but were unfortunate not to take two points and had beaten Catalans and Harlequins previously.

The Tigers are further boosted by the manner in which they performed against Wigan earlier in the season at The Jungle.

"We need to take advantage of what we can and we did for quite a long period in that first game," said Matterson.

"We have a pretty good record at Wigan as well.

"We beat them over there last season and there wasn't much in our play-off match at DW Stadium either."

Experienced prop Paul Jackson and centre Kirk Dixon both return from injury for the encounter and Matterson is confident his side can push on and overcome a four-point deficit to reach the top eight for a second successive season.

"It's there for us and we can make huge strides," added Matterson.

"There's a bit of work to do but we've got to make sure we're in with a chance.

"There's nothing worse than having nothing to play for at the end of the season."

Bradford Bulls loose forward Jamie Langley admits he is growing increasingly frustrated by the quad injury which has kept him out for the last five games.

The England international hopes to return against Huddersfield Giants tomorrow at Odsal as the Bulls attempt to bounce back from their own cup exit at the hands of Warrington.

But he said: "I'll just have to see how it is.

"I've been working it really hard this week and then having a spell off before pushing it once more.

"It all depends how it re-acts and it is the most frustrating injury I've ever had.

"Normally, if you break a bone or get ligament damage you are told how long you will be out for but with this it's just a matter of waiting until it's 100 per cent to hold up."

However, regardless of whether the influential 26-year-old makes his comeback, he is adamant Bradford are ready to respond.

"All the lads were gutted but after that disappointment we can now really focus on the league starting with Huddersfield," said Langley.

Elsewhere, Hull KR entertain Catalans Dragons with Kiwi centre Jake Webster back from a hip injury but luckless Liam Colbon is set to miss another six weeks.

The ex-Wigan winger broke his jaw when Rovers lost in Perpignan in March and was set to return in the rematch tomorrow afternoon.

However, Colbon suffered a knee injury in training on Thursday and is now ruled out again until July.
