Humiliated Castleford 'didn't want it enough' – Matterson

CASTLEFORD TIGERS coach Terry Matterson was under mounting pressure last night after the Super League club crashed out of the Carnegie Challenge Cup at home to Championship Barrow Raiders.

In the only shock of the fourth round, Castleford squandered a 28-12 lead to lose 34-28 and have now won just once in their last six matches.

Angry supporters again showed their frustrations at The Jungle, just as they had after the Easter Monday thrashing by

St Helens, but Matterson laid the blame largely at the door of his under-performing players.

"It was embarrassing and the fans have got a right to express their opinions," he said.

"It's only natural when results aren't going our way but personally my position hasn't changed.

"Those guys in the dressing room have to do better. Some of the tries they scored were diabolical.

"Full credit to Barrow but our blokes weren't good enough. We've been decimated with injuries and I've used that in the past but that's no excuse today.

"We're out of the cup, and our blokes obviously didn't want it enough."

Chief executive Richard Wright, the board of directors and other senior management team members met selected representatives of the fans for a meeting to discuss on and off-field matters at the club last Thursday but this latest defeat has further infuriated Castleford's support.

Barrow, inspired by ex-Castleford, Wakefield and Featherstone stand-off Jamie Rooney, became the first lower-league club to beat a Super League outfit in the Challenge Cup since Warrington lost to Hull KR in 2006, the same year the Tigers also fell against Widnes.

They are only the third in the Super League era to do so away from home and will entertain Championship One club Hunslet in the fifth round.

Huddersfield welcome holders Warrington in a repeat of last season's final. Giants coach Nathan Brown, whose side will look to avenge last year's 25-16 defeat, said: "Warrington are going better than last season but so are we. To get your hands on the trophy you've got to beat the best sides whether it be at round four, five or in the semis."

Favourites Leeds Rhinos have been drawn at home to 1,000-1 outsiders Blackpool, Bradford entertain Championship club Leigh while Batley return to Halifax, scene of yesterday's fourth-round win over amateurs Siddal.

Wigan will be away to the winners of the delayed tie between Widnes and Lezignan.
