Yorkshireman Matt Fitzpatrick rises into world's top 50

SHEFFIELD'S Matt Fitzpatrick has climbed into the world's top 50 following his 13th-place finish in the BMW Masters in Shanghai.

Fitzpatrick, who has accumulated more than £1.25m in prize money in his first full season on the European Tour, has moved up two places to 49th spot.

His season and that of the European Tour concludes this week with the DP World Tour Championship, in Dubai.

The 21-year-old said after his victory in the British Masters, his first on Tour, that he was targeting being invited to play the Masters at Augusta for the first time as a professional, having already competed in the opening major of the season as holder of the US Amateur title in 2014.

The top 50 on the world rankings at the end of the calendar season will get an automatic invitation to play at Augusta next April.

The Yorkshireman stood 51st in the world rankings ahead of the BMW Masters and placed tied 13th at Lake Malaren where he shot 68 71 67 70.
