Yorkshire golf - Club news round-up

They beat Tinsley 2-1 in the final at Lindrick with their team made up of Ben Schmidt, Nigel Sharpe, Bradley Whitehouse, Mick Rowe, Rob Norton and Paul Harrison.

Pete Jones was an emphatic winner of the Pro’s Stableford with a brilliant 43 points. In second place was junior member Dave J Roberts with 40 points, two ahead of third-placed Graham Carr.

The Victory Cup, a bogey format event, was won by Ray Mincher with a score of +5, ahead of Tahir Qaiyum and Adam Foster in second and third places, respectively, with scores of +3.

Qaiyum also collected a prize during the club’s Away Day at Holme Hall, winning the morning individual with 21 points.

The afternoon betterball was won by Richard Herberts and Carl Morte with 42 points.

The Yorkshire Veteran Ladies’ team were captained by Rotherham’s Julia Smith this summer as they won the Northern England title and with it the Richardson Trophy.

Smith has passed on her thanks to club-mates who caddied for the teams during successful home matches against Northumberland and Durham - Rita Tate, Chris Wright, Val Welch, Sue Brewitt, Gay Palmer, Sue Chatterjee, Brenda Twigg, Arline O’nions, Doreen Myers, Elaine McKenzie, Gill Booker and the Lady Captain Chris Coulson.

HUDDERSFIELD GC

Huddersfield’s Lawrence Batley Seniors’ Medal was won by nine-handicapper Robin Merchant, who just managed to edge Robert Hall, also nine handicap, by one shot with a net 68.

Philip Sellen (13) and Mike Dempsey (12) shared second place on 70.

SWALLOW HALL GC

Swallow Hall’s monthly medal was won by Bob Abercrombie with a net 58. His 75 was also the lowest gross and his handicap has fallen from 17 to 15.

Di Scott, the only lady in the competition, was second a shot back and her handicap has been reduced by a shot to 34.

Third was Gerry Marchbank on net 60 while Hew Edwards won the nearest the pin prize and Dave Sharp had the longest drive.

The ladies’ medal went to Anne Carr (net 61), three clear of Jay Teasdale. Ann Lawrence was third with a net 68.

Longest drive was by Ann Lawrence and second-placed Teasdale was nearest the pin.

The Jubilee Mixed Foursomes was won by Leanne Warrington and Gerry Marchbank with Ann Lawrence and Arnie Brandreth runners-up.

As well as winning nearest the pin in the medal, men’s captain Hew Edwards is celebrating a hole-in-one made on the 155-yard par-3 seventh with a five-wood.

HESSLE GC

Hessle’s Pro’s Betterball was won by Phil Scott and Nev Kingswood with a 62 on countback from Grahame Fieldsend and Rob Watson.

Alastair Brown and Howard Morgan were third on 65.

Mark Wishart lifted the Marlborough Cup with a net 67 off nine, on countback from 13-handicapper Graham Collins. Nick Fairbank (6) was a shot back in third.

The Pro’s Stableford was clinched by Paul Russell with 42pts, one ahead of Ross Harmon and two in front of Peter Dibnah.

QUEENSBURY GC

Queensbury GC are celebrating the a £5,700 funding boost from SITA Trust to improve facilities within the clubhouse.

The grant will enable the conversion of a storage area into a ground-floor accessible toilet.

Stuart Kennedy, Club President, said: “This addition will not only improve the facilities for the club membership but also create a much more welcoming venue to accommodate the increasing demand for public functions.”

Marianne Ivin, of SITA Trust, commented: “SITA Trust provides grants through the Landfill Communities Fund. This important source of funding has been available since 1997 and has provided worthy projects with more than £1.4 bn.”
