Hamilton flies Cleckheaton flag high in English Girls’ Under-16 Open

CLECKHEATON’S Olivia Hamilton lies second after the first round of the English Girls’ Under-16 Open Amateur championship at Royal Cromer.

Hamilton carded a 75 to stand just two shots behind leader Nicole Amos (Faversham).

She had eight pars on the way out and just one dropped shot, at the seventh, and came home in level with two birdies and two bogeys.

Three Yorkshire players are in a tie for 34th place after shooting 82.

Hamilton’s club-mate Megan Clarke went out in 44, but was much improved on the back nine, trimming six shots off her outward half.

She had opened with a birdie, but had four bogeys before the turn plus a triple bogey at the seventh.

On her way back to the clubhouse she played steadily, with seven pars and two bogeys.

Nicola Slater (Hickleton) had three double bogeys as she took 45 shots going out, but also improved to come home in 37, marking down two birdies and three bogeys.

Lightcliffe’s Georgia Holden also had a triple bogey at the seventh and was out in 43, but covered the back nine in 39 with one birdie and four bogeys.

In the English Girls’ Under-14 Open Amateur championship, also staged at Royal Cromer, Cookridge Hall’s Adel Watt shot a 91.

The highlights of her round were a birdie 2 at the 118-yard par-3 ninth and an eagle 3 five holes earlier at the par-5 435-yard fourth.

Morgan Leah Thomas (Beau Desert) has a one-shot lead after a 75.
