Club – Drax GC: Pursglove aces during medal following successful cancer surgery

JUST weeks after successfully completing treatment for prostate cancer, Jeff Pursglove returned to playing at Drax GC and fired his first ace, on the eighth hole, during the club’s monthly medal.

His playing partner Chris Burrows said: “Jeff hit a perfect 7-wood that just landed and rolled straight in the hole.”

Pursglove joked: “Yes, it was my first ace, but unfortunately I more than balanced it out by getting in the trees and taking 10 on a difficult par-5 later in the round.”

He was was told just before Christmas last year that he had cancer and underwent open surgery in February.

Remarkably, he started playing golf again in June and quickly made his mark by achieving every golfer’s dream of an ace.

“If you have been diagnosed as having prostate cancer, do not despair,” he said. “Prostate cancer can be beaten and it is possible to come out the other side and enjoy a full and active life.”

“I would like to thank my surgeon, Mr Simms, and all the other staff at Castle Hill Hospital, Hull for doing such a great job.

“And my fellow golfers at Drax for their support during my illness and the tremendous reception they gave me on my return.”

His illness and recovery has given him a new perspective on the importance of golf, and he concluded: “I would like to say to other golfers that if you happen to miss a short putt then, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter. Just be thankful that you are out in the fresh air having fun with your pals.”
