Wycombe Wanderers 1 York City 1: We must build on this, insists Worthington

YORK City manager Nigel Worthington declared himself “very pleased” after watching his team end a four-game losing streak away to in-form Wycombe Wanderers.

The Minstermen took a point against a team who had won their previous four fixtures.

Defender David McGurk opened the scoring in the second half, but the Chairboys’ leading marksman Dean Morgan levelled five minutes later to earn the hosts a point.

It was, nonetheless, a fillip for third-bottom York, who had been beaten by Bristol Rovers, Exeter, AFC Wimbledon and Mansfield prior to their trip to Buckinghamshire.

On his team’s welcome result, former Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United full-back Worthington said: “I was very pleased with the performance.

“I am also pleased with a point and, whilst I would have liked three, it stopped the rot and we’ve got to build on the display now this weekend.”

York shaded the first half with Ryan Jarvis, Wes Fletcher and Josh Carson all calling Wycombe goalkeeper Matt Ingram into action.

It was centre-back McGurk, though, who broke the deadlock on 64 minutes when he headed in a left-wing free kick from Ryan Brobbel.

Morgan, though, ensured the hosts secured a share of the spoils by grabbing his fifth goal of the season.

The former Luton striker tapped in from close range after Matt McClure’s shot hit a post and fell fortuitously for him.

Michael Ingham was also required to pull off a spectacular save from Billy Knott’s thumping 30-yard strike to prevent Wycombe grabbing an undeserved victory.
