Worthington hungry for more of the same

NIGEL WORTHINGTON is hoping a standard has been set in York City’s season following the midweek demolition of Scunthorpe United.

The Minstermen romped to a 4-1 victory over the Iron to move up the League Two table by a couple of places.

Coming after a three-game winless run against teams challenging for promotion, the manner of Tuesday’s performance – when York scored four goals without reply in a dominant first-half display – has left manager Worthington hungry for more.

He said: “The performance was good on Tuesday night and, more importantly, the result was good.

“We have scored goals throughout the season but it was particularly pleasing to do what we did in the first half.

“What we have to do now is look to try and get a few clean sheets. That is something we have largely been lacking this season and we need to do something about that.

“But once the final whistle blew, we were looking straight away to the weekend and Cheltenham. That has been our full focus, as there is nothing to be achieved by looking back. I want to see how far we can go as a team, starting with this weekend.”

Cheltenham, who have reached the play-offs in each of the last two seasons, have had a disappointing start and sit both one place and one point above York.

Worthington added: “I watched Cheltenham a few weeks ago and they are a big, powerful side. They are very strong.

“We will have to match that in every department and see where it takes us. Hopefully, we can do just that and start to build a run of results. That is what we have been lacking.”

York will be back in the West Country again on Friday for their FA Cup first-round tie against Bristol Rovers. A clash with Bristol City’s tie at home to Dagenham & Redbridge has brought about the switch but Worthington insists it will not be a problem.

The City chief said: “That is just football. The Cup tie being played on a Friday doesn’t concern me. We will train accordingly and just get on with things.”

Luke O’Neill’s possible availability in the Cup will be addressed next week following the defender’s loan from Burnley being extended.
