Wembley incentive as Guiseley attempt to sink Hatters in Trophy

GUISELEY manager Steve Kittrick insists lessons learned against non-League luminaries Crawley Town earlier in the season can help his side tomorrow when Luton Town visit Nethermoor in the FA Trophy quarter-finals.

The Conference North club are enjoying a fine campaign and are handily placed to launch a promotion push during the run-in.

Despite that, former Football League outfit Luton will start tomorrow’s tie as favourites to take a step towards the Wembley final on May 7.

Kittrick, however, believes the experience of being knocked out of the FA Cup by Crawley in the first round last November could help his side pull off an upset.

He said: “Crawley were the best non-League side I have seen for a long, long time. They beat us convincingly but we learned a lot of lessons from that.

“The same is true of our (FA Trophy) win at Barrow and the games we had against Eastbourne Borough. We deserved to get through both rounds.

“What I learned from the Crawley game was that we have got to be that little bit tougher. Luton are a big name and a big club but we will be mentally more equipped this time.”

The Hatters sit fourth in the Blue Square Premier, six points behind Crawley, so Guiseley will have to upset the odds to progress to the last four of the Trophy as they attempt to resurrect memories of their glory days in the lower tier FA Vase in the early 90s.

Kittrick added: “I think it is a bit more of a glamorous tie than Crawley. They are a big scalp and the supporters are excited about the game.

“It would be a big feat to beat Luton but the players are confident and we have worked on a few things in training this week.”

With Guiseley sitting fifth in Conference North and having games in hand on all but Alfreton Town of their rivals, Kittrick is happy with how the season is progressing.

He said: “It has been good so far. I was a bit despondent with our second-half display in Tuesday night’s goalless draw at Harrogate Town. But, overall, things have been going well. The key now is to keep the momentum going.”

Any replay will be at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday, March 1 (7.45).
