Stevenage Borough 3 Rotherham United 0: Millers suffer further setback after drawing blank against Stevenage

ROTHERHAM United's promotion push suffered another setback as they went down to a third successive defeat against battling Stevenage.

The conquerors of Newcastle United in the FA Cup proved stubborn opponents once Peter Winn shot them into a first-half lead and they picked off the Millers twice more late in the game to complete a convincing win.

Winn shot the home side into the lead two minutes before half-time when latching on to a long ball to fire inside goalkeeper Andy Warrington's near post.

Marcus Marshall was denied at the far post soon afterwards but the Millers offered little going forward in the first half and also struggled to hit a rhythm after the break against opponents who chased and fought for everything.

Adam Le Fondre had Rotherham's best chance soon after the interval when his shot on the turn whistled inches wide after Jamie Green played him in.

League Two's leading marksman has now gone six matches without a goal.

Danny Harrison scuffed a shot over the bar in a goalmouth scramble but the Millers always looked vulnerable on the break and their fate was effectively sealed five minutes from time when Laurie Wilson broke down the right-hand side and his low cross was turned in by substitute Byron Harrison.

Home striker Chris Beardsley put a header narrowly wide of the angle of post and crossbar as Rotherham struggled to find a way back before a superb 25-yard curler from Scott Laird rubbed salt into the wounds.

Defender Chambers struck with the aid of a slight deflection two minutes into the second half to ensure Billy Davies' side leapfrogged Leeds into fifth place in the table.

Forest, who have won six of their last seven league games, are still unbeaten at the City Ground this season and sit just a point behind an automatic promotion spot with a game in hand on their rivals.
