Results must improve, insists Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY manager Garry Monk is under no illusions that results must improve in the club's four games of the Championship season - for all manner of reasons.

After a bright enough start to the resumption, Wednesday are doing it tough on the back of a three-match losing streak.

It has intensified fears among some supporters that the club could be propelled into real relegation trouble if they end up receiving a points penalty from the EFL - in the event of losing their case over charges of breaching profitability and sustainability rules.

As it stands, Wednesday are seven points clear of third-from-bottom Hull City, although they will be mindful that Wigan are likely to hit with a 12-point penalty at the end of the season for entering administration - with the punishment set to apply in this campaign.

Sections of the club's support has also been vociferous in their criticism of Monk during a grim 2020 thus far, with the Owls chief conscious of the situation and the need for some results to quieten the dissent.

Monk said: "There is no easy way about this period. We need to improve results. Results have not improved, especially in these last three (games).

"I know in my line of work that results are king and they have to improve in these four games. It is simple as that."

"We do that by doing what we have been doing positively and showing that resolve, grit and ability to roll our sleeves up better when we need to in those moments to get the job done."

Meanwhile, Monk is calling for his players to show a tougher mindset and show their 'ugly side' in key junctures of matches - after letting their guard slip in their last two games against Preston and Swansea in particular.

He added: "In all the games we have had, we have put ourselves in really good positions and not capitalised on that.

"The message we have been talking about in those moments is that it is about capitalising when we are on top and in good positions to win games.

"The other side of it is that we just need to find a little bit more resolve, grit and determination to dig in those moments when we need to.

"It is just finding that more resolute side to ourselves. We have found ourselves in really good positions in large parts and we have been in positions to take points or extend our lead or whatever.

"We have to grind those moments out and if that means toughening it out, that is what we need to improve (on)."
