But Saturday’s 2-0 win over a Bristol City, who clinched the League One title last season on the back of a 16-match unbeaten run – their last defeat was on February 21 – certainly impressed the 23,255 Hillsborough crowd.

Asked if he was aware of the need to bring the feelgood factor back to home fans who witnessed just 16 goals and five wins in 23 Championship matches at Hillsborough last season, Carvalhal said: “I respect a lot the work of my previous coach and other coaches. What I’m trying to do is create a new era for the club to break the last 15 years.

“The last 15 years have not been good to the club and we are trying to create a fantastic atmosphere so that people enjoy coming to the stadium and bring the family.

“If we win, they will be more happy and drink some beers to celebrate. We don’t want them to drink beers to forget the match.”

New signings Jack Hunt and Ross Wallace were substituted and likely to be rested for tomorrow’s League Cup tie with Mansfield Town.

“Jack Hunt and Ross Wallace came late into pre-season,” said Carvalhal.

“It is absolutely normal that they are not at the same level as other players. They were just tired, just had a little bit of cramp.

“If they are not ready for Tuesday, they will be ready for the next match.”
