Forestieri set for Owls return

Fernando Forestieri is in contention to make his comeback for Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

The striker netted on his home debut against Fulham a fortnight ago, but was withdrawn at half-time due to a calf injury.

The Argentine was not included for the League Cup win at Newcastle United (a game he would have missed anyway because he was cup-tied), plus last Saturday’s 2-1 Championship win at Brentford.

But the 25-year-old striker has trained this week and could resume his partnership with Atdhe Nuhiu when the Owls entertain Preston North End on Saturday at Hillsborough.

Left-back Daniel Pudil is less certain of recovering from an injury which forced him off in the first-half at Griffin Park.

“He (Forestieri) is training normal but we don’t know about Pudil,” said Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal. “He was involved in light training. He will train in the morning. It is possible Daniel could play.

“We will see tomorrow. Fernando partly trained yesterday but I was protecting him. He trained normally today. We will see if he has a good reaction tomorrow. It will be good if he is fit.”

Looking to extend a four-game unbeaten run, which includes three consecutive wins, Carvalhal hopes his side have learned lessons from their second-half display at Brentford.

Leading 1-0 and playing against 10 men, Wednesday dropped deeper and deeper, which allowed the hosts to defy their numerical disadvantage to grab an equaliser.

It took a stoppage-time goal from Lucas Joao to earn the Owls all three points.

“They reacted after going behind and took risks,” said Carvalhal. “We must be ready to take risks. We corrected our mistakes. We focused too much in this match on controlling the game.

“The last 10 minutes (first-half) were very bad for us because we played with 11 against 10. We kept the ball and the opponent were completely down but we should have gone for the second goal.

“In the second part, we should have been more aggressive. They corrected things and showed a reaction and we must be ready for that. We stayed too passive. We must be aggressive to try to win the ball and get the second goal.

“We made some mistakes but we will correct it. We were fortunate to get the win.”
