Charlton Athletic 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1: Morrison gives Owls reasons to be cheerful in Valley stalemate

GARY MEGSON admitted he was pleased with a draw after Clinton Morrison snatched Sheffield Wednesday’s first point of the season away from home.

Morrison struck with his first touch after coming on as a 54th-minute substitute for debutant Ryan Lowe and his header from Chris Lines’s corner was enough to cancel out Bradley Wright-Phillips’s opener for Charlton.

“I can’t really say we deserved a win,” said Megson. “I’d be coming out with rubbish if I said that. I think a draw is fair. I can’t remember us having another chance.

“The first goal was pathetic defending, and in the first half if we dropped back any further we would have been wearing snorkels. It was a really poor goal to give away.

“But Clinton got the opportunity and that’s what he does. You can’t teach that.”

Wednesday are still winless on the road in five matches in all competitions this season – a flaw Megson needs to address if he is serious about escaping League One.

Charlton took the lead inside three minutes. Wright-Phillips was given too much freedom and he made Wednesday pay with a fierce, low strike that beat Richard O’Donnell from 25 yards.

Megson wasted no time in handing Lowe his debut, hauling Chris Sedgwick off after 22 minutes for the ex-Bury man. His drastic move did not have the desired effect as Wednesday failed to muster a single attempt on goal in a poor first half.

It ended up being a miserable debut for Lowe, who hobbled off after 54 minutes to be replaced by Morrison. The former Crystal Palace striker was the villain of the Valley once again as he had an instant impact.

Lines’s corner caused confusion and Morrison was on hand to nod past the helpless Hamer to earn Wednesday the draw and despite finding fresh impetus following the equaliser, Megson’s men could not quite nick a victory.
