Preston 2 Sheffield United 1: Treacy double stuns Blades

SHEFFIELD United were subjected to yet more misery as they crashed to a fourth consecutive defeat at Preston North End, writes Ian Appleyard.

Relegation is all but guaranteed now for the Blades who sit eight points adrift of safety at the bottom of the Championship with only four games to play.

But Blades manager Micky Adams will be angry that his side did not come away with at least a point after missing good opportunities and conceding soft goals.

Former Blades loanee Keith Treacy scored twice for Preston before teenager Jordan Slew pulled a goal back on his full debut.

Bjorn Helge-Riise and Darius Henderson were both guilty of spurning gitl-edged chances before substitute Nathan Ellington sealed the win for Preston in the 89th minute.

There had been no goals and only limited goalscoring opportunities in the first half.

Slew had gone close when forcing Preston’s on loan goalkeeper Iain Turner into a good low save at his near post.

Striker Chris Brown might have broke the deadlock for Preston but shot wide under pressure from defender Neill Collins.

Harry Maguire, another teenager making his first start, has looked comfortable in the Blades defence.
