Rotherham United's Ben Wiles blow as Scott High returns to Huddersfield Town

Ben Wiles' season could be over as another Rotherham United midfielder, Scott High, returns to Huddersfield Town.

Vice-captain Wiles faces the very real prospect of ankle surgery after going off injured in the first half of the Boxing Day draw with Stoke City.An initial scan does not look promising but the Millers were waiting to learn more as they prepared for Thursday's Yorkshire derby at Huddersfield.

"There's serious damage to his ankle," manager Matt Taylor said of Wiles. "He'll see a specialist next week to see what needs to be done in relation to surgery.

"It's a real shame for the lad. We've got to make sure we support him for however long it takes him to get back on to the pitch.

"It could be the end of his season if he requires surgery, and it looks like he does. We're waiting to see if there is bone damage on top of the significant ligament damage. It's more than one ligament.

"There was no-one near him. He landed in an unfortunate manner. We felt we were near to getting him in peak form.

"It's a major blow for us, we can't hide away from that. He gives us flexibility, something different in terms of our midfield dynamic."

Meanwhile, on loan Huddersfield midfielder Scott High has been recalled by his parent club.

"He will go back on the player's request as much as anything else in response to not getting the game-time he feels he warrants, which I can understand," said Taylor. "He has been behind Ben Wiles, Ollie Rathbone and other players.

"It has been a frustrating loan move for Scott because he will feel he has not got enough out of it. The important thing for Scott is that he gets value out of his next loan move if he does go back out on loan.

"He's a talented player. We could never find a way to fit him in consistently around the other midfielders and attackers we have."

High made one Championship start and 12 substitute appearances.

Rotherham are two points above the relegation zone going into the final round of matches for 2022, but a second consecutive win for bottom-placed Town, who won at Preston North End on Boxing Day, would cut the gap between the clubs to two points.
