Rotherham United 0 Southend United 4: Defeat not acceptable - Scott

Andy Scott’s Rotherham United were routed 4-0 by Southend United at the Don Valley Stadium in League Two.

Southend ended Rotherham’s unbeaten home record in style and extended their own winning run to three games.

On loan striker Brett Williams has gone back to parent club Reading for treatment on an ankle injury. Defender Johnny Mullins and midfielder Mark Bradley were named as substitutes after recovering from knee and hamstring injuries respectively but Jamie Annerson and Paul Warne (both knee) remain sidelined.

Millers trailed after 10 minutes when Peter Gilbert fired home for the visitors after Rotherham failed to clear a corner.

On-loan midfielder Michael Timlin’s double made it 3-0 to Southend after the restart.

Striker Neil Harris then added a fourth for Southend to rub salt in Rotherham’s wounds.

“It was not acceptable in every department,” Scott said.

“We were out fought and out run. Southend were better than us in every department. It is one of the first times that I have ever said that about one of the sides that I have put out and it is alarming that I have to admit that. I am not going to hide away from the fact that we were second best everywhere.

“It is the same problems over and over again and it is embarrassing for me because it makes it look like we don’t work on it. Amazingly we have been working on everything that happened today, even at half time we talked about throw-ins which we have been saying all week, and two minutes into the second half they do exactly what I have not asked them to do.”
