Rotherham United 0 Peterborough 1: Millers lose unbeaten record

The Millers have not lost since April when they were in the midst of a run to automatic promotion in League Two. They have carried that momentum into this season, winning four and drawing four of their opening eight games.

But Peterborough, who lost their Championship status on the final day of last season, have made an equally strong start and ended Rotherham’s run thanks to a second-half penalty from Grant McCann after Kari Arnason was penalised for handball at a corner.

Prior to that 51st-minute intervention, Rotherham had been the better team, and even afterwards, created enough chances in an absorbing contest to at least draw level.

But Peterborough are a powerhouse team in this division and would not relent.

Ben Pringle was the architect of much of Rotherham’s bright play, going close twice in the first half, while his set-pieces created a great chance for Mark Bradley whose shot was deflected wide.

Daniel Nardiello should have scored when he followed in a long-range effort from tireless midfielder Rob Milsom but blazed over.

Posh boss Darren Ferguson gave his players the hairdryer treatment at half-time and it worked as they tore out of the blocks in the second half, getting their reward just six minutes in when Arnason handled.

Before and after McCann’s penalty, Paul Taylor was a constant threat in the hole behind Britt Assombalonga and Tyrone Barnett, but still chances were few and far between.

Rotherham must have out-shot their visitors by three to one, with Nardiello, Bradley, Kieran Agard and Joe Skarz all spurning opportunities to grab the equaliser.

But it was Peterborough whose strong start to the season continued, though there was no shame in this defeat for the Millers who were rightly clapped from the field at full-time.
